Applying for a PhD

Students who have earned a Master's degree can go on to do a PhD. Earning a PhD at a Dutch university generally involves four years of research, followed by writing a doctoral thesis. Universities announce their PhD positions through newspaper advertisements and on the internet (for example PhDPortal) among other channels. All interested individuals are welcome to apply.

Foreign students already living in the Netherlands who would like to go on to do a PhD have to apply for a new residence permit. This is because PhD positions in the Netherlands are categorised as 'work' rather than ‘study'. For more information, see Nuffic and IND.

Information on PhD grants is available on www.grantfinder.nl.
