Language requirements
Required fluency
If you want to take an English-taught degree programme at a Dutch research university or university of applied sciences, you must have a good command of the English language. Fluency in speaking, writing and reading English is therefore essential. To demonstrate fluency, you must pass an English language test prior to starting your programme. Schools and universities all over the world accept IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language). In general, a different, comparable test is also accepted in the Netherlands. You can find more information about the required scores on the Nuffic sites and the sites of individual universities.
If you wish to enrol in a Dutch-taught study programme, you will generally need to pass the state examination in 'Dutch as a second language' (NT2). However, some higher education institutes have their own language test, so always check with your chosen institute!

Looking to improve your English before you start your studies? Some universities in the Netherlands offer English language courses. However, these do generally require applicants to take entrance exams first (IELTS, TOEFL or an equivalent). Check if the higher education institute of your choice offers such courses.
